This is our first official video!  You’ll note the incredible professionalism throughout!
Thanks so much for your support during 2015.

PODCAST – INTERVIEW with Minicine

Recently I headed down to the beautiful Armley Mills Industrial Museum to have a  natter with the fabulously funny Minicine team – Woody and Abi.

As regular readers will know, I’m a long time supporter of Minicine, but only recently attended one of their screenings (check out my review for Westwood HERE and Wayne’s World HERE), who are based out of The Palace Picturehouse – one of the world’s smallest fully functional replica’s 1920’s cinemas.

We all of us (well two of us anyway) talk a mile a minute so we manage to cover A LOT of territory. Naturally, we discussed the origins of Minicine and the ethos that drives it, as well as the challenges of trying to come up with a program of events… let alone the associated audio and video playlists, reviews and pictures that are the playground of the truly obsessed!

Social cinema – as run by Minicine – is all encompassing, featuring cults, classics, foreign films as well as short films and anything else that Abi and Woody can sneak in, which leads to a particularly diverse and inclusive community atmosphere events. SPOILER – we pretty much decide it’s based on the cake amazing films that the team have brought together season by season in the last few years.

Which naturally leads us onto their award winning years – as they are the recent recipients of the Film Society Of the Year Award for 2015!

We also took a sneak peek at its exciting plans for 2016 – including the upcoming Human Nature season.

PODCAST – EP05 – Because of Buffy

Buffy-the-vampire-slayer

a.k.a. AhhhJossJossJoss

shona and tomShona and Tom recently recordedat The Vampire Ball – a convention to celebrate the worlds and works of Joss Whedon.

The dynamic duo take a moment to discuss and reflect upon the show that started it all (for us lot anyhoo!) – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

After successfully identifying themselves as Willow and Xander (well duh guys, seriously!); the pair look at how this show changed their lives for the better; the cult of Whedon theme song (no really) and kitten poker as well as much much more!

Shona also mentioned my Buffy story (which you can read about HERE) which got me to thinking  (a dangerous pastime, I know!). So many of my con family have come together directly as a result of this oft derided and under-rated TV series.

What’s your ‘Because of Buffy‘ story?

We’d love to hear from you – how your life has changed ‘because of Buffy‘ – in big ways or small. If you’ve blogged or vlogged or podcast about it, let me know and I’ll get all linky with it!

Conversations with Geek People – Suicide Squad SQUEE Podcast

The upcoming Suicide Squad film has Shona so excited and she just can’t hide it! In fact, she’s roped in her main squeeze Eoin (@Eo1nb) have a natter about the style and look of the Empire Covers (below) and overall feel from the trailer.

Given that the film is in fact a year away, be prepared to find the DC flag flying proud! Shona and Eoin also pose some immensely important questions, including a few below:

  • How do you say Leto? – Lito or Leeeto..or something else?
  • The Joker aesthetic – particularly the damaged tattoo
  • Heath Ledger’s Joker Diary – to read (if it ever became available) or not to read
  • Can a trip to the local tesco’s be described as a trek?
  • The evoltuion of the on screen Harley
    • Is it harder or easier to originate a character like this?
  • Not comparing Jokers…but comparing jokers…
  • DC versus Marvel – specifically in relation to the tone of the films
  • Will the jester outfit it into the film?

QUICK CHAT with Magda Apanowicz

Recently, the delightful Magda and I chatted about her upcoming SF project on Indiegogo – OmniWorld (have a listen here, if you wish!).

She’s nearly always smiling or laughing in person!

While I had her on the line, it seemed only right that we have a little catch up about her life, work and hobbies. We only had a few moments but still managed to fit in snippets about a ton of stuff including putting the final touches on Continuum’s final season and how hard it is to say goodbye to such awesome characters; learning accents (for roles mostly!); The Green Inferno – finally released after sitting in limbo for some time and cooking as a hobby.

Then we discover why people shouldn’t podcast while hungry as we sort of descend into food worship – PRO TIP there, lads!

Also, Magda has agreed to be a CultFix Special Correspondent (like our very good friend Reed Diamond) – so hopefully we’ll be hearing more about her adventures soon!

MINI-INTERVIEW – Magda Apanowicz talks about OmniWorld

Recently I came across a tweet promoting an Indiegogo project called –

OmniWorld – The Movie

When tragedy strikes a couple leaving one of them in a coma, the other is presented with the technology to reconnect the two lovers, but at what cost?

I was intrigued by the idea and, when I read further, realised that Culturally Fixated friend Magda Apanowicz is set to star!

magda eh

Naturally I asked her to share some behind the scenes info with us. We only had a ten minute chat but – as you imagine from two talkers – cover A LOT of ground.

omniworld

We chat about why Maggie Werning (the director) chose Indiegogo and what it’s like raising funds for a film this way.

Magda also gives us a basic run down of the plot and what it was in particular that drew her to the project. We then have a bit of a natter about science fiction; the role that technology plays in our lives and the impact of this upon us as individuals but also as a society and species.

Magda chats about pushing the boundaries within storytelling and acting. And then the two of us get deep and meaningful (read a bit paranoid) about the prospect of a real life Elysium; about the importance of human connection and harmony with technology.

As always, it’s a true pleasure nattering with Magda – she’s so genuine and funny and awesome.

This project is still raising funds for another week or so. If this sounds like something you’d like to support, head over to THIS page on Indigogo for contribution details!

Guy to Taylor Momsen Transformation!

In this video I (try to) transform my friend Tom into his favourite singer, Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless! We had such a laugh making this video and it was all in good fun. We are both big fans of Taylor, so if she ever watches this… hiiiiiiiii! *waves*

If you enjoyed this video please tweet it to @taylormomsen! 😀

PLUG and REVIEW (ish) – 2 Kill Comic

IMG_3089You might recall me bragging about my friend Tom Ellis HERE and HERE.

Well, the little sod has gone and done it again! Damn him and his inspirational/creative self!

Tom has created a comic book series.

And written the first issue.

And published it.

And is selling it.

Episode 01 is a tale of intrigue.
An assassin is sent out to kill someone.
We see the instructions being given.
Then the interactions between the pair.
Who is the target? Who the assassin?

tom comic

Initially I had intended writing a full review for Issue One but to do so would quite spoil this twisty-turny tale.

What I will say is that this is a terse thriller. The language used is deliberately ambiguous and captures the attention and imagination of the reader. The dialogue reads right, the character sound like they’re actually talking to each other (one of my normal bug bears in comics) which is a huge thumbs up.

All artwork has been created by Katie Thompson – another friend and con-family member of mine. Though I’ve seen bits and pieces of her work before, nothing on this scale and nothing so deliberately minimalist and stylistic in tone. I love the use of light and dark and that the only colour used in red. The emotions of the characters are emphasized throughout – bravo Katie!

I’m hugely impressed by my two mates – this is a terrific project! However, this is not perfect – not just yet.

In places, I could have used more exposition via text rather than via the artwork. During the dinner date for example, I almost resented having panels devoted to each detail of the nights progression – I thought that the pace suffered slightly here as a result. (However, later, after the date – the use of the art to propel the story forwards, as opposed to the writing is spot on. I’m an inconstant woman, clearly).

I look forward to seeing the direction that Tom and his intrepid team of awesome take for the next!

And we’re hoping that you will be involved. By doing exactly the same thing that you’re already doing.

Keep tweeting us suggestions, recommendations, hints, tips and tricks! If you can think it, we can Geek it…probably…
