Hey guys!

This is our first official video!  You’ll note the incredible professionalism throughout!
Thanks so much for your support during 2015.

PODCAST – EP05 – Because of Buffy

a.k.a. AhhhJossJossJoss

shona and tomShona and Tom recently recordedat The Vampire Ball – a convention to celebrate the worlds and works of Joss Whedon.

The dynamic duo take a moment to discuss and reflect upon the show that started it all (for us lot anyhoo!) – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

After successfully identifying themselves as Willow and Xander (well duh guys, seriously!); the pair look at how this show changed their lives for the better; the cult of Whedon theme song (no really) and kitten poker as well as much much more!

Shona also mentioned my Buffy story (which you can read about HERE) which got me to thinking  (a dangerous pastime, I know!). So many of my con family have come together directly as a result of this oft derided and under-rated TV series.

What’s your ‘Because of Buffy‘ story?

We’d love to hear from you – how your life has changed ‘because of Buffy‘ – in big ways or small. If you’ve blogged or vlogged or podcast about it, let me know and I’ll get all linky with it!

Conversations with Geek People – Suicide Squad SQUEE Podcast

The upcoming Suicide Squad film has Shona so excited and she just can’t hide it! In fact, she’s roped in her main squeeze Eoin (@Eo1nb) have a natter about the style and look of the Empire Covers (below) and overall feel from the trailer.

Given that the film is in fact a year away, be prepared to find the DC flag flying proud! Shona and Eoin also pose some immensely important questions, including a few below:

  • How do you say Leto? – Lito or Leeeto..or something else?
  • The Joker aesthetic – particularly the damaged tattoo
  • Heath Ledger’s Joker Diary – to read (if it ever became available) or not to read
  • Can a trip to the local tesco’s be described as a trek?
  • The evoltuion of the on screen Harley
    • Is it harder or easier to originate a character like this?
  • Not comparing Jokers…but comparing jokers…
  • DC versus Marvel – specifically in relation to the tone of the films
  • Will the jester outfit it into the film?

And as comic Harley

Brittany Murphy  as Harley

Shona is not alone in thinking that Brittany Murphy would have been the perfect Harley – there is a ton of fan created art, available online.

*Other supermarkets were also available…but less convenient.

Guy to Taylor Momsen Transformation!

In this video I (try to) transform my friend Tom into his favourite singer, Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless! We had such a laugh making this video and it was all in good fun. We are both big fans of Taylor, so if she ever watches this… hiiiiiiiii! *waves*

If you enjoyed this video please tweet it to @taylormomsen! 😀

Conversations with Geek People – we exist!

to everyone who has downloaded and listened to our podcast; RT-ed; been generally supportive or tweeted B-A-N-A-N-A-S at Shona (@EllieJayden) and myself over the last two days.

xander 01We’ve very happy.

We’re giddy happy like.

We’re Xander Snoopy Dance happy.

As exciting as it is to have the podcast up and running; there are still a few details to sort out.

Tiny insignificant things like submitting the podcast to itunes and hoping to the Gods that it gets picked up there. Makes subscribing just SOOOOO much easier. {did you see what I did there? Subtle, right?}

And we’re hoping that you will be involved. By doing exactly the same thing that you’re already doing.

Keep tweeting us suggestions, recommendations, hints, tips and tricks! If you can think it, we can Geek it…probably…

Suggestions so far

  • Top 3 of what we are watching/reading/listening/etc
  • Top 3 of what we’re looking forward to watching/reading/listening/etc
  • Playlists
  • Videos
  • We recommend…

Personally, I’d like to come up with a pithy funny hashtag so that we can chat with you effectively! However, I’m a bit crap at stuff like that…so I’m hoping one of you will provide one!

Let me know any suggestions and we’ll pick the one that sings to our souls

HOME TOURIST – Geashill – The Glebe Walk

My home village of Geashill holds a very special place in my heart.

Welcome to Geashill, a charming, picturesque village halfway between Tullamore and Portarlington, in the heart of Co. Offaly. It’s built heritage evolved during the 18th century; the Castle dates from the 12th century but its history can be traced right back to accounts of the excommununication of St. Columba at a synod held here in 550 A.D.

From the geocache page

Returning to Ireland at the age of 16 was…a bit odd. It was difficult to know my place in the world. However, I never felt anything but at home in Geashill.

It’s always been a particularly beautiful place (no bias, honest!) and in the last few years it seems that everybody is pulling together to make it even more so. The Tidy Towns Committee in particular (DISCLAIMER – my dad is on it) have been incredibly active at ensuring that the village is presented at its best, while promoting the indigenous natural wildlife.

On my most recent trip home, I took my friend @EllieJayden on a tour. Despite only living 25 minutes away, she had never been before and must have been a bit bemused when I suggested it.

As I could easily wax lyrical about the beauty of Geashill for hours, I’ve decided to focus this post on my special favourite spot – The Glebe Walk.

At the entrance is a nature board – highlighting the diversity of wildlife in the area.

The Glebe Walk - nature board 2

My father – Pat Foley – created the artwork for the board. *proud face*

And just as you enter, is the Insect Hotel.

This was built in 2012, with the assistance of the Killeigh and Geashill Boy’s Brigade.

Insect Hotel

A detailed look at the Insect Hotel

An Insect Hotel is:

a manmade structure created from natural materials, they can come in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the specific purpose or specific insects it is catering to.

The Hotel is a favourtie with local schools – read a recent(ish) report here.

There are also benches and seats along the path.

Hard at work…

There is also a tree planting project underway in the Glebe – known as the Trees for Families scheme.

Trees appropriate to the area (such as Red and Holm Oak, Horse Chestnut, Common Beech) are individually sponsored by the residents of Geashill (though I believe that anyone can seek to become involved). Each sponsor receives a certificate – recording the sponsor and the recipient; a unique dedication and a map so that you can locate it at a later point.

Meet me..the tree! A very meta-experience!

On National Tree Week; the  Tree Planting project celebrated 150 new trees sponsored in the Glebe Walk. Personally, I get a little flash of delight every time I spot one of these posts or labels. It’s exciting to think how these will fill out and complete this space that I love – and for years to come.

As you wander; it is evident that a lot of love and care has gone into rebuilding the bridges and walkways – see HERE for a post on the building process.

A few years ago; a fire was set in one of the dead trees. Thankfully, the damage was minimal and no one was hurt; however, it became necessary to cut away the tree (rather than the preferred route of leaving the stump and branch remains to become part of the ecology).

In June of 2015; ‘Aisling’ arrived to claim the tree stump as her new home.

Due to the light on the day; it was almost impossible to capture the tree sprite in a photo but Ellie managed beautifully.

Aisling in full flight

And for her in full glory

Please note that Aisling was created by Patrick Foley…whom I happen to know…

Oh and there’s even a geo-cache to be found!

The Photo credit for many of the shots used above belong to the fabulous and talented @EllieJayden – find her blog HERE and youtube channel HERE

PODCAST – The Shona and Niamh show…yeah, we’ll work on the name….

shona and niamhThis is *NOT* a Culturally Fixated or Leeds Book Club  podcast!

When Shona and Niamh get together, the craic is always mighty.

So this is our first podcast together!

We want to discuss all manner of Geeky topics from our own wonderful and wild perspective!

Hiya guys,

We’ve had some feedback that the link isn’t working. I’ve had a play and it seems good on this side – so clearly, it’s gremlins! I’m including a few different options below – if you are still having problems, please let me know. Worst comes to worst, I’ll phone you and play it down the line (in all honestly…I probably won’t really do that!).

Fabulous Friends

Take a peek to see Ellie Jayden’s fun post on the 10 Emotional States to cleaning our your Closet.

This is SO true.

fashion gif

In January, I cleaned out my closets – shoes, clothes, bags, jewelry, belts, hats, gloves – which was a great success.

Though I still need to have another go in a few months weeks to rid myself of those last few ‘aspirational/who am I kidding, I couldn’t fit into them when I bought them’ items that I seem to be unable to shed just now!

nothing to wear gif

This month, himself and I are tackling the library/spare room and creating a home office space. Which *should* only have affected the two rooms involved but has somehow resulted in an ever increasing mess that seems determined to take over not only our home but the whole street/city/WORLD!

west wing gifs

And of course, as is always the case when books are involved, there is a hefty dose of deception. Me placing books in box for recycling, in full view of himself. Me then creeping down to said box in the middle of the night and trying to sneak those same books back onto ‘their’ shelves.

My response to ANYONE who actually recycles books

Naturally, rather that stick to the task at hand, I decided that this was the perfect weekend to tidy up the garden. So while himself is nobly going through years worth of collected books, papers, stuff and thaings…I’m prancing around outside, freezing and sweeping and moving pots from one corner to the other.

no band ideas

Course it will all turn out all right in the end. Mostly because himself will drag me back to the task at hand either by threatening to organise my books himself or by bribing me with large quantities of cheese.

He’s good like that.

My favourite things – #2 – (Some of) My Amazing Friends!*

Continuing on my ‘favourites’ theme, here are a few links that always lift my spirit and fill my heart with hope! And giggles.

Anyone who follows Leeds Book Club will know of Book Elf Leeds and of course, Culturally Fixated is co-run with Steve Shooter – but here are some equally inspiring creatives!

Helen Carr

helen carrFull Disclosure – Helen is one of my favourite people in the world. And in a book blogging/podcasting sense, she is technically my (LBC) baby.

Along with blogging about books and life in general at Hello from me to you, Helen also runs a radio book club out of South Leeds Community Radio. She’s an active writer and reviewer for Leeds Book Club and runs LBC Puffins – a book club for adults reading children’s books. Which is just AWESOME.

Ellie Jayden

Ellie Jayden cosplayThe first vlog I ever followed (mostly because Ellie Jayden herself was standing right beside me and showed me how!) on YouTube. Ellie blogs about all sorts of differing things – from fashion to cosplay to these wonderful incredibly articulate rants about various genera/geek topics (soooo much fun!).

Sure, shes stunning, with a natural grace and poise, but you’ll get hooked because she is capital S Smart, funny and brings passion to every topic!

Ellie and I met at a SF convention (multi-con but we bonded over comics and Whedon) and by pure co-in-ci-dink, we’re from the same county in Ireland. I mean, there are only 26 of ’em but still – what are the chances that we’d randomly meet at a geeks fest in Birmingham!

David O’Reilly

david oreilly as sherlock

David is the one dressed as Sherlock…

Our mutual fellow con attending mate Dave was similarly impressed and promptly set up his very own video blog – you’ll find it here on YouTube.

David primarily tackles issues that make him go GRR (indeed, there are now nearly 20 posts entitled ‘What the F**k?’) but where I’d end up a ranting raving drooling mess; David manages to remain cool, collected and logical.

Naturally I sort of hate him for that…but the videos are too well thought out and interesting for me to avoid! Besides, he’s hilarious!

Thomas Ellis

ScarlettTapeTVScarlett – a five part webseries.

I don’t even have words. The pure, green laced ENVY I have for this young man (And he is young. Sickening so) and his extravagantly blatant talent. Ugh. Just…ugh!

And as if writing and directing your own five part web series; then arranging to film and shoot it wasn’t enough of a trial; he’s only gone and made it available on DVD. Oh and there were rumours of a comic at one point (I’m a touch out of the loop on that now).

And now, Thomas has set up his own film business – People Per Hour. He’s one of my con family and a constant source of giddy glee and inspiration!

September McNabb – Pandula

pandulaWay back in the dark ages, September and I attended primary school together. Now, we have that facebook relationship where you are vaguely aware that the other seems to be doing OK, but have no real contact.

However, in recent months I started to notice these amazing designs creeping across her FB page. Tembi (and friends) now makes jewelry with a particular and unique Southern African influence (as well as an eye towards the environment). As a colour worshipper; I’m utterly mesmerized.

Kirsty Ware – Hello Kirsty

photoHonestly, Leeds just hasn’t been the same since Kirsty first bounced into my life. It’s so much COOLER, SMALLER and BETTER now. Life saver doesn’t even begin to cover it!

Aside from a pathological inability to sit still, K is funny, charming and creative. Additionally, we share two very important obsessions – our favourite Disney princess is Belle (the reader!) and competitively quoting certain essential children’s films from the 80’s – including The Princess Bride and – naturally –  Labyrinth. You see, she reminds me of the babe…

She also runs about half a dozen groups and clubs across Leeds (don’t believe me – check out her Projects page) as well as creating the first unofficial rotation curation accounts – People of UK and Leeds on twitter.

* This is by no means a definitive list of my inspiring mates. I imagine that I’ll be doing a follow up to this in a bit…but I didn’t want to overload the awesome in one post!
