Michaela DePrince was just featured on the BBC Breakfast show, promoting her new book Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina. I’ll be adding this one to my list or must-reads this year.
An incredibly articulate and matter-of-fact speaker; we were both of us fascinated to hear the story of the life that she had put behind her, as well as impressed by her skill as a dancer.
Michaela was interviewed for the Guardian in 2012 and discussed her early life as a ‘devil child’ (who would ever say that to a child?!) in an orphanage in Sierra Leone; her adoption and subsequent move to the United States and the challenges that she has faced as a woman of colour in ballet. It’s really worth a read.
